SPEEDECK produced geotechnical solutions for foundation integrity and environmental safety:
Concept Design
SPEEDECK developed an accurate ground model from the geotechnical site investigation, which eliminated the need for heave precautions. Made Ground was present, underlain by Head Deposits which are described as sandy gravelly clay with abundant flint cobbles. Despite the clay description, Atterberg Limit testing show this stratum to be non-plastic and it is therefore not prone to heave.
SPEEDECK designed a piled foundation scheme and associated report to address the potential risks found associated with dissolution features.
We proposed a Reinforced Concrete Raft foundation with CFA Piling, from a traditional ground beam approach. Our Raft foundation reduced excavation times and provided a barrier against elevated radon levels. The plot was deemed to be close to a flood zone, mitigation measures were considered with a raised of 1.2m to the existing ground to mitigate this risk. Pile lengths were not affected.
Streamlined construction processes by eliminating the need for a granular piling mat, instead opting for a 50mm concrete working surface which stayed in situ.
Design Engineering
SPEEDECK’s focus on geotechnical efficiency led to innovative strategies that significantly reduced expenses with expedited project timelines:
Conducted an in-house load take down, saving the client £30,000 compared to the external engineers load estimates.
Compiled a detailed heave report and liaised with warranty providers to secure approval, avoiding additional costly heave precautions.
Collaborated with external consultants to design an under slab venting system, mitigating the risk of elevated radon levels.
Delivered the GA drawings, Pile Design, and Steel Schedule within four weeks, enabling a timely start on-site.
Construction
SPEEDECK adapted construction methodologies to accommodate challenging site access, working with the client to facilitate seamless operations with minimal disruptions.
Utilised a 65m boom pump for concrete placement as the site did not allow for traditional boom pumps. There are only a few of these 65m booms in the country so efficient project management was critical throughout.
Implemented a waterproof lift pit solution with a materials guarantee.
