Derbyshire Piled Raft Foundations

We are pleased to announce that we have been nominated as a finalist for a prestigious UK Ground Engineering Magazine Award – in the category “UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £500K and £1m”. The nomination comes in recognition of our outstanding contribution to the development of the northern section of the Clay Cross housing project in Derbyshire.

A Piled Raft Solution

We undertook the foundation design and construction for houses in the Clay Cross Works area, completing 59 plots across the site. We expedited the project while saving valuable time for the client. By navigating challenging ground conditions through innovative engineering approaches, including our unique and agile approach to design, and the use of a piled raft solution, the team ensured the project’s success.

Concept Foundation Design

Through targeted site investigations, we delivered substantial cost savings, aligning with the client’s objectives for cost-effective project delivery. A thorough analysis of ground conditions and historical land use informed effective planning and risk mitigation strategies.

Engineering Piling Reduction

Our detailed design adjustments, including a 25% reduction in pile numbers and decreased total pile length, resulted in significant cost savings for the client. By integrating piled rafts as the ideal foundation solution, the team minimised risk, optimised construction efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.

Constructing a Concrete Working Surface

In a concerted effort towards sustainability, we implemented innovative measures throughout the construction process, such as using a lightweight piling rig and opting for a 50mm Concrete Working Surface over a conventional crushed granular material working platform. Effective project management and collaboration ensured swift problem-solving and adaptation, leading to the completion of piling activities ahead of schedule.

Summary:

The project’s results were remarkable, with foundations for 59 plots completed in just 11 weeks, a saving of 40% on the original proposed time scales. Positive outcomes included:

We generated approx. 2,400m3 of muck away vs the predicated 6,105m3 offering a 60% reduction. We saved 1,634m3 of imported aggregates – approx. 200 lorries worth and used 80T of steel vs the originally specified 110T – a 25% saving.

We saved 25% of piles from the original design which reduced costs for the client, streamlined project management, and material savings contributing to longer-term sustainability objectives.

The project’s longer-term impact is evident in the transformation of Clay Cross into St Lawrence Fold, a £22 million regeneration scheme that has revitalised the area with improved transport links, new amenities, and a vibrant family community in the heart of Derbyshire.
